Ever felt like the 9-5 grind is slowly but surely draining the soul out of your life? It’s exhausting. Working long hours, feeling like you spend weekends just ‘catching up’ rather than enjoying life, dreading Monday aka the Sunday scaries, and even working hard all year for a raise that might not come (or, let’s be real, isn’t keeping pace with inflation) – are all such common experiences. I did that whole routine, too. And let me tell you, there is a better way.
In this guide, I am going to break down the surprisingly simple blueprint on how to plan your escape from the 9-5 and live your dream life–whatever that dream might be!
Here’s my disclaimer: I am just another regular, burned out millennial who was seeking a more sustainable way of living. I spent years building up side hustles and learning about alternative income streams. I am on a mission to help others learn how they can earn more doing what they love while enjoying the freedom to live their lives. I hope my research and experience helps educate and inspire you to think outside the box and create a life you love.
Breaking Free from the 9-5
The 9-5 Trap
It’s so easy to be lulled into complacency. We graduate, find a job, work 40+ hours a week, begin to hate the job, search for a new one, the excitement wears off in a year or two…and the cycle begins again. You work for someone else, making that CEO or company big $$$, and they expect more and more from their employees each year – with the lure of a 3% raise or bonus that may or may not come at the end of the year. Layoffs are rampant. PTO is scarce. The millennial generation is particularly disillusioned with the status quo as they were promised a fulfilling climbing-corporate-ladder career post undergrad that could afford them a house, a family, and an annual vacation. What studies are now finding are that the millennial workforce is well into their 30s and 40s with many delaying or even nixing the idea of children altogether (Hi, it’s me Amanda, my dog and husband are a complete family and we live in a tiny rented home). The 9-5 used to be a stable path for generations past, but no longer provides a fulfilling or sustainable lifestyle. It creates burnout and lacks flexibility.
Well, what if I told you there was a way out of this that was sustainable?
The Allure of Unconventional Living
If you love the stability of corporate life, make enough to live comfortably, and have enough work-life balance…you can navigate away from this blog, because it won’t be of any help to you. For the rest of you still reading, creating an unconventional life might mean you get everything you want. If you desire:
- More time freedom to do what you want
- The ability to take vacations or PTO as you desire, no limits
- Higher pay while working less than 40 hours a week
…then this blog is for you!
When I started to get serious about creating a life I loved, I started by looking at others who were living MY dreams. They were all digital nomads, van-lifers, homesteaders, luxury travelers, and even SAHMs. They all had freedom, and that freedom came from non-traditional lifestyles.
Non-traditional lifestyles aka life outside the 9-5 corporate or nonprofit grind, means slower living, sustainability in work life, and the ability to build a dream life. From digital nomads working from different corners of the world to modern homesteaders embracing sustainable farm life – there’s an endless array of unconventional lifestyles that you could build for yourself.
“But you have to make sooo much money to transition to that life.”
“There’s no way it would work for me, I earn so little”
“I’m too burned out and unmotivated to even start”
So much of the transition from office life to one of freedom is the mindset that goes along with it. It’s natural to have a mental block up of what is possible. Start to dream more about what your ideal life looks like, start journaling about an ideal day, your natural skills and strengths, who you want to help, etc.
If you want to explore this further, I break down some of the initial steps that I used in my Slowpreneur Kickstart Guide (snag it for HERE).
Unconventional Income Streams
Entrepreneurship as a Gateway
Another piece of the ‘freedom puzzle’, another common thread, was that these people I looked up to had all started their own business(es). Entrepreneurship brings with it so much freedom; time freedom and financial freedom. Yes, it can be hard work but it can also be incredibly rewarding. By starting your own business, you have power over how and who you help, the work you do on a daily basis, how much you can earn in a year, and how much time you can take off. It’s so incredibly flexible – fitting just about any lifestyle you want to live and, if built correctly, can be a sustainable way to heal burnout and leave behind hustle culture. Entrepreneurship is the golden ticket on how to escape the 9-5 and begin to build the life you want.

Passive Income: Working Less, Earning More
Here’s the thing: entrepreneurs and self-employed folks can very easily fall into the trap of hustle and grind, working more than 40+ hours in a week, and never taking time for themselves. The key to making entrepreneurship and small business ownership work for you (giving you time + financial freedom) is to build in passive income streams. Passive income allows entrepreneurs to make money while they sleep, freeing up time and resources for other pursuits. Here are just a few ideas to build passive income streams into any business:
Investments aka Make Money Work for You:
One of the most effective ways to generate truly passive income is through smart investments. If you are just starting out and are still employed, utilize tax-advantaged accounts from your employer such as 401(k) or 403(b) retirement accounts, and Health Savings Accounts (HSA). You can also explore options like Roth IRA and SEP IRA, which can offer long-term benefits. Diversifying investments with brokerage accounts and stashing emergency savings in high-yield savings accounts ensures a steady stream of passive income over time.
Affiliate Marketing:
Affiliate marketing is an emerging, powerful avenue for entrepreneurs to earn passive income by promoting products or services and earning a commission for each sale made through their unique affiliate link. This strategy is particularly effective for those with a strong online presence or a niche audience.
Drop Shipping:
Entrepreneurs who want to explore the world of e-commerce can set up a dropshipping business. This model involves selling products without holding inventory, as the supplier ships the product directly to the customer. With minimal upfront costs and the potential for significant profits, dropshipping is a great passive income option if you can invest in the right product and know the market.
Print on Demand:
Print on demand products are when you create custom-designed products like apparel, accessories, or home decor without dealing with inventory or shipping. Platforms like Printful and Printify handle production and shipping, allowing you to earn passive income without dealing with customer service. The upfront investment includes market research, designing the product, and reaching an audience.
Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing):
For those who love to write, Amazon KDP offers a platform to publish and sell e-books effortlessly. Authors can earn royalties on each sale of their book, turning creative endeavors into a consistent source of passive income.
Digital Products:
Creating digital products like printables, e-books, courses, worksheets, puzzle books, journals, or other low-content books provides entrepreneurs with a scalable source of income. Notion templates and other digital assets can be sold repeatedly without the need for inventory.
YouTube:
Entrepreneurs can monetize their expertise and creativity by starting a YouTube channel. Through Google ads on their videos, creators can earn revenue based on the number of views and the amount of engagement their content receives.
Ads on Website or Blog:
For those who have a blog or website with a substantial following, monetization through ads is a surefire way to generate some income. Services like Google AdSense allow entrepreneurs to display targeted ads, earning money for each click or impression. For this option, you do need to have a large readership base.
It’s important to note that any business model can become ‘passive’ with the right systems in place and by outsourcing tasks that don’t require the owner’s direct involvement. While the initial setup may demand effort and time, the long-term benefits of a well-established passive income stream make it a worthwhile investment for entrepreneurs seeking financial independence. By diversifying and leveraging various channels, entrepreneurs can unlock the full potential of passive income and enjoy the fruits of their labor in the long run.
Achieving Time and Financial Freedom
Diverse Paths to Freedom
Now we’re putting these pieces together. Living unconventionally means you can build the life you want. Starting a business means you have control over your time, income, and freedom. It can take time and effort to build up passive income streams, but the benefit is that you own your time and do not have to rely on corporate work to survive. Plus, you have time to escape hustle culture and heal burnout.
Cut down on living costs strategically, add in those alternative income streams, and voilà – you’re on the highway to both financial and time freedom. This is a rebellion against the ‘hustle or die trying’ mindset of our current world, because our health, our family, our time, and our sanity are all so much more important than making more $$$ for the big CEOs of the world.
In the blog posts ahead, we’re going to unpack more stories of these entrepreneurs, delve deeper into the nitty-gritty of how to live on your terms, and embark on a journey together to find freedom in the unconventional. Ready? Let’s roll! 🚀
