Definition of a Slowpreneur
In this fast-paced hustle-culture, the term “Slowpreneur” has emerged as a beacon of hope to all of us struggling to survive, by prioritizing intentional, purposeful business-building. A Slowpreneur is someone who values sustainable growth over rapid, often fleeting success. As someone who has had many side-hustles over the years, I can attest to that pressure to continuously hustle harder, even after long hours at the office or in place of relaxation on the weekends. I became burned out – until I started learning more about ‘slow business’.
Importance of Building a Business at Your Own Pace
In Western culture, specifically in the United States, where many are captivated by overnight success stories, it’s critical to understand that there are options for business outside of the norm. Building a business at your own pace allows for intentional planning, thoughtful decision-making, and the creation of a venture that can handle sustainable growth over time. In my case, I began researching what types of businesses exist, which are sustainable, and which can be built over many years. I spent time brainstorming what a ‘dream life’ entailed. For me, it looked like intentionality in my daily routine, flexibility to travel and work remotely, and to help others. For you, this could look like more time to spend with your children, finally getting that dream car, or helping your parents retire. No matter what it is, building a business that aligns with your skills and strengths, provides an ideal work-life balance, and helps you work toward your long-term dream life via sustainable growth – is your key to success!
Understanding the Slowpreneur Mindset
Embracing Patience and Long-Term Goals
Patience is the cornerstone of this Slowpreneurial mindset. It’s about understanding that success is a journey, and that you must stay consistent. Setting both short and long-term goals provides a roadmap for not only your business but your dream life, ensuring each step is purposeful and sustainable. Plus, you get to celebrate each milestone as a personal ‘win’!
Practicing Self-Care and Avoiding Burnout
A Slowpreneur also recognizes the importance of self-care in maintaining creativity, productivity, and overall well-being. Avoiding burnout means setting boundaries (especially with yourself!), taking breaks, and prioritizing mental and physical health.
Focusing on Quality Over Quick Results
Rather than chasing quick wins, Slowpreneurs understand the value of delivering quality products or services. This approach builds trust with customers, fostering long-term relationships that form the foundation of a sustainable business. This is a concept with which I feel deeply aligned. Why would I do work if the outcome is not purpose-driven or meaningful? If this mindset speaks to you as well, keep reading.
Step 1: Finding Your Passion and Purpose
Identifying Your Personal Values and Interests
Your business should align with your core values and interests. This not only fuels motivation but also ensures that your new business venture is an authentic representation of who you are. Keep in mind, we don’t want to monetize our favorite hobbies or interests! That is a road to frustration and burnout. If there is something in your life that brings you peace, do not – I repeat – do not monetize it. We are looking for interests and values that can be explored without the potential to infringe on an already-enriching piece of our life. With that in mind, spend some time journaling on your core values and interests.
A few questions to reflect on are:
- What lights me up each day? What parts of my daily routine make me the happiest?
- In any of my current or previous roles in life (career, volunteer, mentorships, parenthood, romantic relationships, friend groups) what part of my personality naturally emerges? Am I the patient listener, the enthusiastic cheerleader, do I tend to quietly observe before sharing, or always make sure everyone feels included?
- What are my hobbies? What do I most often research on the internet? When I have free time what do I want to do?
- What feedback about myself do friends and family tell me the most often?
- If I had to write a mission statement for my life, what would it be?
- The world would be a better place if everyone would ________?
What big patterns emerge from your answers? What surprised you? Pull out a few themes and jot those down. Now it’s time to think creatively.
Step 2: Explore Potential Business Ideas Aligned with Your Passions or Skills
Start researching and exploring potential business ideas that resonate with you. There are plenty of business models out there: ecommerce, blogs, affiliate marketing, content creation, coaching, selling services or products, building a brand to resell, flipping retail, and the list goes on. See what piques your interest and follow that lead! Your passions, interests, skills, and ideal lifestyle should align with that business model. Do you love fashion and want to help other corporate parents feel professional at the office but still comfortable? Are your skills in content creation or communication? You could become an affiliate marketer for brands helping that specific niche by creating videos of outfit ideas.
Step 3: Building a Unique Business Model and Developing Your Business Plan
Defining Your Business Objectives and Target Audience
A well-defined business plan outlines clear objectives and identifies your target audience. This serves as a compass, guiding your decisions and actions throughout your business-building journey. This is especially important for Slowpreneurs who want to take thoughtful, deliberate, actions to reach their target audience and grow their business authentically. While there are plenty of free business planning templates and resources out there, the most important part of your work here is to define for yourself what success looks like, what your lifestyle goals are, and who you want to help (your target audience). By recording this, you will be able to check in on your progress so as not to lose sight of your business goals.
Creating a Unique Value Proposition
What sets your business apart? A unique value proposition communicates the distinct benefits of your offerings (whether products or services or other) and helps you stand out in an increasingly competitive market. Focus first on the pain points that your ideal customer is facing and how you can solve those problems for them. The resounding issues that I hear about include being burned out and lacking purpose at work, and I want to solve these problems for others. In fact, creating this blog was a way to empower myself and empower others to dream bigger for their lives.
Outlining a Realistic Timeline and Setting Achievable Milestones
Set realistic timelines and achievable milestones to measure progress. This keeps you on track and provides a tangible sense of accomplishment as you reach each milestone. Think of three categories when it comes to milestones:
- Revenue – what do you want your business to be bringing in the first year, second year, and 3rd year marks? What income sources do you have and how many?
- Lifestyle – what does your lifestyle and work-life balance look like at those annual check-ins? Are you thriving or surviving?
- Audience – how large have you grown your community and how engaged are they?
Each person and each business is going to look vastly different, but that is the exciting part of this exercise. Set realistic goals for slow growth and add in income streams or new audience segments as you grow. The beauty in business ownership is that you are in charge, and you can make those iterations as you go.
Final Thoughts:
The Slowpreneurial journey is about intention, patience, and sustainable growth. It’s a deliberate path to building a business and income source to sustain your lifestyle and build your dream vision. For all aspiring Slowpreneurs out there, the best advice is to just simply take the first step. Your journey may be slow, but each stride is a purposeful move towards your new life. Embrace the Slowpreneurial approach, and watch your dreams flourish.
